CIO Presentation
      "Moving from Innovation to Breakthrough"
Speaker:  Bob Reeder, CIO of Alaska Airlines (retired)

Abstract:
Innovation.  It's a word we hear a lot these days, and rightly so.  Webster defines Innovation as the introduction of something new.  However, we need to make a distinction between an invention, where an idea becomes a reality, and the application of the idea.   In that context, Innovation means a new way or a change in the way something is done.  The change can be radical or incremental, but it manifests in a new thought, process, or product.  An invention, such as the World Wide Web, needs to be shaped into something that puts the capabilities to use, such as a transaction web site or an online auction.  While most of us are intrigued by the invention, our challenge as IT professionals, is to harness or shape technology into something that provides a measurable benefit.  Unfortunately, there is not a strong correlation between the introduction of something new, and commercial success.  In this session we will discuss some ways to shorten the path from Invention through Innovation to Breakthrough!

Bob Reeder will share his thoughts on how to accelerate the time from Innovation to Breakthrough and will present some examples from his 13 years as CIO at Alaska Airlines.

Bio:  
For the past 13 years Bob Reeder has been the CIO at Alaska Airlines.  It's been said that Alaska Airlines has been an innovator in the airline business, from selling the first ticket on the World Wide Web to pioneering self-service check-in at airports and over the Web.  InformationWeek magazine has recognized Alaska Airlines as one of the nation’s 100 most technologically innovative companies and the company has been consistently listed in the InformationWeek 500.
   
Mr. Reeder came to Alaska in 1990.  Prior to that he worked 18 years for Deere & Company, a leading manufacturer of agricultural, industrial, and consumer equipment, where he held a number of information technology positions.

In 2007, he became an adjunct professor at the Albers School of Business & Economics at Seattle University where he teaches Management of Information Technology in the MBA program.
